Today we offer hospitality in the form of donuts and coffee as a way to build community. This is one of the simple ways we seek to get to know each other and share a little time and blessing.
Hospitality is one of the focuses we have this year in many different aspects of our faith and most especially in the stewardship of the gifts we have received from God. A few weeks ago we shared with the parents of the children in faith formation (catechetics) the five (5) forms of prayer in our Catholic tradition and how we are called as disciples to practice and use these prayers in our lives.
In our call to be witnesses in hospitality the first form “Blessing and Adoration” where we acknowledge our dependence on God is vital and important. When we recognize our gifts are gifts from God who loves and blesses us then we are able to return the same blessing and love in the sharing of these gifts with family, friends and community. Hospitality in “blessing and adoration” is the opening of our lives to the blessings given and shared in the faith and knowledge that God is in charge.
This can be difficult for adults, young adults and teens and this is why, I believe, Jesus keeps pointing us to be like children. Children know they are loved and cared for but they also know they are not in charge: they are dependent on something greater. There parents, larger family and community are called to care for them and help them grow into holy and joyful sons and daughters. This is where our example of prayer and action come into focus…because if the child hears the words but does not see the action their faith in dependence on God, trusting in the goodness of others and seeking to serve and share their goodness with others is dampened and in time can be destroyed. On the other hand when they see their parents, family and community acting and praying in “blessing and adoration” then they grow into the saints God has made them to be.
In the coming weeks the parish will put out some videos explaining and sharing experiences of the five prayer forms that can be found on the parish e-news letter or on our website.
We also ask that you review and pray about your financial support of the parish. We continue to give thanks to God for your support (the fourth form of prayer) and ask as our budget needs to increase your support will follow.

Hoy ofrecemos hospitalidad en forma de donas y café como una manera de crear una comunidad. Esta es una de las formas simples en que buscamos conocernos y compartir un poco de tiempo y bendiciones. La hospitalidad es uno de los enfoques que tenemos este año en muchos aspectos diferentes de nuestra fe y más especialmente en la administración de los dones que hemos recibido de Dios. Hace unas semanas compartimos con los padres de los niños en formación de fe (catequesis) las cinco (5) formas de oración en nuestra tradición católica y cómo somos llamados como discípulos a practicar y usar estas oraciones en nuestras vidas. En nuestro llamado a ser testigos en la hospitalidad, la primera forma, la “Bendición y Adoración”, en la que reconocemos nuestra dependencia de Dios, es vital e importante. Cuando reconocemos que nuestros dones son obsequios de Dios que nos ama y nos bendice, podemos devolver la misma bendición y amor al compartir estos dones con la familia, los amigos y la comunidad. La hospitalidad en “bendición y adoración” es la apertura de nuestras vidas a las bendiciones dadas y compartidas en la fe y el conocimiento de que Dios está a cargo de todo.
Esto puede ser difícil para los adultos, los adultos jóvenes y los adolescentes y es por eso, yo creo, que Jesús sigue indicándonos que seamos como niños. Los niños saben que son amados y cuidados, pero también saben que no están a cargo: dependen de algo más grande. Allí los padres, la familia más grande y la comunidad son llamados a cuidarlos y ayudarlos a convertirse en hijos e hijas sagrados y felices. Aquí es donde nuestro ejemplo de oración y acción se enfoca … porque si el niño escucha las palabras pero no ve la acción, su fe en la dependencia de Dios, confiando en la bondad de los demás y buscando servir y compartir su bondad con los demás, se humedece y con el tiempo puede que se destruya. Por otro lado, cuando ven a sus padres, familia y comunidad actuar y orar en “bendición y adoración”, se convierten en los santos que Dios ha hecho que sean. En las próximas semanas, la parroquia publicará algunos videos explicando y compartiendo experiencias de las cinco formas de oración que podrá ver en el e-news, la carta electrónica, de la parroquia o en nuestro sitio web. También le pedimos que revise y ore por su apoyo financiero a la parroquia. I must first apologize…this week, not last week, the parking lot is back to normal. One of the challenges of writing a bulletin to be ready for Sunday is that often times, as we look ahead, we can mix up dates, times and events even when the calendar is staring you in the face. I do hope that each of us had a joyous Sunday last week at Mass and at the St. Lucy Fun Fest. Now back to this week: Sunday, October 14th. “When we are focused on the blessings God gives to others, we often miss and dismiss the blessings God is sharing with us.” We are often tempted to look at what we do not have instead of the blessings surrounding us. Whether it is material or spiritual, financial or family we often judge ourselves by what others have or have not in the world. The spirituality of stewardship asks us to focus on who we are and the gifts of time, talent and treasure we are all called to share. This is always a challenge because to be true stewards we must take time in knowing the foundation of all the gifts we have and this foundation is a relationship with Jesus Christ.
It is in this relationship where we discover the unimaginable value each gift shared has in the eyes of our God. We too often hear ourselves saying the words, “I don’t…I can’t…I’m unable to…it’s not possible” when confronted with a calling from the Church, family or community. The invitation from God is to see how our gifts, when surround by God’s plan, become part of the mosaic of the Body of Christ. St. Lucy parish has a great history of responding to God’s invitation to love and serve our brothers and sisters. This weekend, as we participate in the “MInistry Mingle” Jesus invites you to respond with the “I will…I can…I am able to…and it is possible” in our response to God’s call to serve. It is also a time to renew our financial commitment to the parish and see how we may support the many ministries of St. Lucy parish with our gifts of treasure. In our call to be good stewards of our time, talent and treasure, we are reminded that no gift is too small and when we focus on the blessings God shares with us daily we find the true joy and blessing in our lives. Primero debo disculparme … esta semana, no la semana pasada, el estacionamiento ha vuelto a la normalidad. Uno de los desafíos de escribir un boletín para que este listo para el domingo es que muchas veces, como miramos hacia el futuro, podemos mezclar fechas, horarios y eventos, hasta cuando estoy viendo el calendario. Espero que cada uno haya tenido un domingo feliz la semana pasada en la Misa y en el Fun fest de Santa Lucía. Ahora volvamos a esta semana: domingo 14 de octubre. “Cuando nos enfocamos en las bendiciones que Dios le da a los demás, a menudo no vemos y descartamos las bendiciones que Dios está compartiendo con nosotros”. A menudo nos sentimos tentados a ver lo que no tenemos en lugar de las bendiciones que nos rodean. Ya sea material o espiritual, económico o familiar, a menudo nos juzgamos por lo que otros tienen o no tienen en el mundo. La espiritualidad de la corresponsabilidad nos pide que nos enfoquemos en quiénes somos y en los dones del tiempo, el talento y el tesoro que todos estamos llamados a compartir. Este es siempre un desafío porque para ser verdaderos administradores debemos tomarnos tiempo para conocer el fundamento de todos los dones que tenemos y este fundamento es una relación con Jesucristo.

Our parish parking lot is back to normal again this week. On behalf of the parish and school staff I wish to thank you for your patience, generosity of spirit and gift of presence you shared with us during our annual Fun Fest. Over the past few months the parish staff, pastoral and finance councils have been working hard in developing plans to grow our community, especially in the sense of hospitality. You may have noticed the welcoming cards and the change in the way we invite all of us to begin our Mass with recognizing visitors and new members of our community. In this way we hope to grow our stewardship of the greatest gifts we have: the people of God. October is also a month dedicated to our Mother Mary and today, October 7th is the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary. The rosary is a powerful and joyous gift. I remember during many evenings praying this prayer with my eight brothers and sisters led by my father. It is a prayer that helped unite us as a family of faith and love.
As the rosary unites us to God we are also united in how we serve each other in the stewardship of our time, talent and treasure. Your gifts of treasure help to support the mission of St. Lucy in bringing others to Jesus through the ministries of the Church. It is a constant blessing to share in the mission with each of you as we are invited to share in the ministries. As noted above we hope at St. Lucy to grow our ministry of hospitality and ask each of you to prayerfully consider how you are able to serve our parish community in small and large ways. Your generosity of time, talent and treasure help us to be a light shining brightly to those in need in our community. Lastly, one of the great blessings of generosity is seeing things grow. Our Capital Campaign Renewed in the Light is helping us make our buildings as welcoming as our hearts. And through the generosity of the Our Lady of Guadeloupe ministry and the donors to the Pastor Fund, we were able to do some much needed updates to the Annex Kitchen with the installation of a new sink, preparation area and two stoves. El estacionamiento de nuestra parroquia vuelve a la normalidad esta semana. En nombre de la parroquia y el personal de la escuela, deseo agradecerles por su paciencia, generosidad de espíritu y don de presencia que compartieron con nosotros durante nuestro Fun Fest anual. En los últimos meses, el personal de la parroquia, los consejos pastorales y de finanzas han estado trabajando arduamente en el desarrollo de planes para crecer nuestra comunidad, especialmente en el sentido de hospitalidad. The month of October is a month the Catholic Church dedicates to our Blessed Mother Mary. It is a time when we traditionally honor Mary in her role in salvation history. This coming October, our Bishop Patrick has asked all parishes within the Diocese of San Jose to take time to be in prayer offering reparations for the victims of abuse in our diocese and throughout the whole world.
As I have written and shared on many occasions, we are called to offer prayers for the growth in our own personal holiness but also of all people. At St. Lucy we will be offering special nights of prayer, adoration and reconciliation throughout the month of October.
Beginning with the Diocesan service at St. Joseph Cathedral on October 1 beginning at 7:00 p.m. we at St. Lucy will offer each Wednesday of the month two hours of prayer. On October 3rd beginning with Mass at 6:00 p.m. and followed by adoration until 8:00 p.m. Each following Wednesday of the October 10, 17, 24, and 31, at 6:00 p.m. we will offer the Rosary and Novena Prayers to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Each Wednesday we will also offer time for quiet reflection and also a short talk on spiritual growth and prayer offered by our priests or other lay faithful. During the full two hours St. Lucy will also offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The services on Wednesday will be primarily in English.
St. Lucy will also offer prayers of reparation on each Friday of the month. The first Friday, October 5th beginning at 7:00 p.m. we will offer a Mass of healing followed by an hour of adoration, prayer and singing. Each following Friday October 12, 19, and 26 we will offer the prayer of the Holy Rosary followed by time of prayer, reflection and singing. There will also be spiritual talks and the Sacrament of Reconciliation just as on Wednesday. While we normally have Friday prayers from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., during the month of October St. Lucy will place special emphasis on prayers of healing and blessing. The services on Friday will be primarily in Spanish.
At the entrances of the Church you will find a letter from our Bishop Patrick announcing several steps that will be taken to ensure the continued protection of children of vulnerable adults. Bishop Patrick will be holding two additional listening sessions on October 2nd and a second session on October 17th.
Please continue to pray for the continue healing, sanctification and purification of our Catholic Church.

El mes de octubre es un mes que la Iglesia Católica dedica a nuestra Santísima Madre María. Es un momento en el que tradicionalmente honramos a María en su papel en la historia de la salvación. Este próximo octubre, nuestro Obispo Patrick ha pedido a todas las parroquias dentro de la Diócesis de San José que tomen tiempo para ofrecer oraciones para las reparaciones de las víctimas de abuso en nuestra diócesis y en todo el mundo. Have you checked out formed.org? If you haven’t you’ve been missing out on some wonderful and valuable gifts offered to you and your family. It is during these turbulent times in our faith life and our Catholic Church where we need to continue to strengthen the foundation of our call to be disciples of Jesus Christ. I try to look at formed.org at least once a week to see what is new, there is always a reflection on the upcoming Sunday, or to catch up on some aspect of our faith to feed the heart with a new and greater depth of love. Here are some titles you might consider listening to or watching in the coming days/weeks.
- Put Not Your Trust in Princes—this talk shares some of the ways we can build a Christian culture in our homes, communities and world. It is an honest look at our need to live holy lives in the midst of the many problems we now face.
- True Reformers: Saints of the Catholic Reformation—This talk covers some of the great saints in our Catholic tradition who called forth the holiness of the Church in the face of division and scandal. Sound familiar. We can all learn the virtues of prudence and charity from the example of these women and men who defended the faith with truth and clarity. We see how courage is lived out in times of trouble.
- Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist— This video series is perhaps my favorite on formed.org. It goes through our belief in the miracle of the Eucharist and explains the scriptural foundations and how our traditions in the Catholic Church point directly to the reality of the gift of Jesus in the Eucharist. A bonus is there is a catechetical episode and also one for children and for families preparing for First Holy Communion…this series is important for us all to see.
I would invite all parishioners to sign on to formed.org. There is a mobile app that allows you to listen to many of these talks while you are on your daily commute or with your children in the car. There are many children videos available too! Don’t forget we are looking for Catechist to help our parish grow. - ¿Quien Fundo Tu Iglesia? – ¿Por qué somos católicos? ¿Quién fundó la Iglesia Católica? Reflexiona sobre estas preguntas y nos da respuestas. Es especialmente importante para familias de fe que están desafiadas por amigos y vecinos, pero también por padres cuyos hijos dudan de su fe y no quieren ser católicos. Esta platica nos ayuda a hablar sobre nuestra fe con confianza y verdad.
Invito a todos los feligreses a se registren en formed.org. Hay una aplicación móvil que le permite escuchar muchas de estas platicas mientras que va a su trabajo o esta con sus hijos en el automóvil. ¡También hay muchos videos para niños! Today we begin the yearly journey of walking with the young people in our parish community in their discovery of the depth of God’s love for them as they prepare to receive his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist. What are we doing to prepare today and every day to walk with them? Today I would like to talk a little more about stewardship, especially the stewardship of the temporal goods. As many of you know there was a small controversy in our Diocese of San Jose concerning the purchase of a retirement residence for our current Bishop as he prepares to step down and Bishop Oscar Cantu becomes the third Bishop of San Jose. His decision to sell the property was part of his stewardship ministry as he reevaluated his call to serve. One of the duties the Bishop has, as well as each pastor of a parish, is to care for the treasure of the Diocese or Parish community. This is something I take very seriously. Canon law requires that each Bishop and pastor has a Finance Council to advise him in his decisions but ultimately it is the will of the Bishop or pastor to make the final decision. I bring this up because of our ongoing Capital Campaign Renewed in the Light.
Part of the financial care of a parish (or Diocese) is the care of the physical plant; the buildings, parking lots and other areas. This is an important part of the financial planning and expenditures because it effects the long term ability of the parish to do the work of evangelization. As the parish seeks to open the doors of Jesus Christ in bringing the good news to the people of Campbell and beyond we are reminded of the need to have facilities that are ready to welcome all people, not just today but for years to come. Thank you for your continued generosity in support St. Lucy Parish. One small correction from our Parish News Letter “The Good News”: under the Capital Campaign Status Update we erroneously listed Project Leadership Development as an item. Please be assured that all donations to the Campaign are being used for the renewal and renovation of the parish buildings and property. Lastly, the Society of St. Joseph was started earlier this year to recognize those who have remembered the Catholic Church, such as parishes and schools, in their wills or trusts. If you have done so, please let us know so we may thank you. Several months ago a parishioner died and we discovered she had left us a remembrance. I have prayed in thanksgiving for the gift, but I would rather have thanked her in person. Please see the parish website for more information.

Hoy comenzamos la jornada anual con los jóvenes en nuestra comunidad parroquial en su descubrimiento de la profundidad del amor de Dios por ellos, mientras se preparan para recibir su Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad en la Eucaristía. ¿Qué estamos haciendo para prepararnos hoy y todos los días para caminar con ellos? Hoy me gustaría hablar un poco más sobre la corresponsabilidad, especialmente la administración de los bienes temporales. Como muchos de ustedes saben, hubo una pequeña controversia en nuestra Diócesis con respecto a la compra de una residencia de retiro para el Obispo actual cuando el Obispo Oscar Cantu se convierte en el tercer Obispo de San José. Parte del cuidado financiero de una parroquia (o Diócesis) es el cuidado de la planta física; los edificios, estacionamientos y otras áreas. A couple of quick and random thoughts parish thoughts…but all are connected through our stewardship of time talent and treasure.
First, you may have noticed a few posters around the parish that have announced a new parish directory. It has been over 11 years since the last time the parish did this and it is long overdue. We will be talking more about this but your gift of time either as a volunteer helper or as a family being photographed is very important to us in knowing who we are as St. Lucy Parish.
Second, next weekend, September 9th we will begin our children’s faith formation schedule for the parish. We have hired a new director: Mrs. Monica Echevers to lead this evangelization effort. We are very happy to have her with us. She will be introducing herself to the full St. Lucy community in the days and weeks to come. Please keep her in your prayers. But also…keep our children in your prayers as they begin. If you have forgotten to register your child or are new to the parish and are just in the process of beginning, please call the office for more information. Remember our faith formation classes are not just for those who are preparing to receive First Holy Communion, the classes are for to help form disciples of Jesus Christ, please help us help you in this work of evangelization.
Third, the St. Lucy capital campaign Renewed in the Light is bearing great fruit. We thank all of you who have pledged and given to this campaign. We have been working with the architects formulating the drawings and plans to meet the needs and goals of the parish. It is very exciting to look forward to beginning the work on our lights and bathrooms in the spring of 2019. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We as a parish community are blessed with your generosity and with the parish Finance Council seek to be good stewards of the treasures we are entrusted with. Please keep us in your prayers and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Un par de rápidos pensamientos parroquiales … pero todos se conectan por medio de nuestra administración del talento, el tesoro y del tiempo.
Primero, puede que haya visto carteles alrededor que anuncian un nuevo directorio parroquial. Han pasado más de 11 años desde la última vez que la parroquia hizo esto. Hablaremos más sobre esto, pero su don de tiempo, ya sea como voluntario o como familia fotografiada, es muy importante para nosotros.

As we continue to reflect on our call to stewardship we are also reminded of our duties to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. We can often focus on the stewardship of treasure, thinking of money, but we must also remember our stewardships of the many other gifts God shares with us. There is the famous story of St. Lawrence the Martyr, when asked to turn over the treasures of the Church to the civil authorities showed up the next morning followed by the poor of Rome. Or in our own time how Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement called the Church to care for the poorest of the poor with dignity and respect. And most importantly how God, through the gift of children invites parents and the community to care for them in love.
As we begin a new year of school and faith formation the care of our young people in teaching and living the faith in Jesus Christ is ever more important. The terrible and tragic news and reports of the abuse of trust given to the Catholic Church against the most vulnerable in our families is beyond description. Last week our Bishop Patrick reminded us all of the need for vigilance in love and how our faith in God must continue to point us to the care for all and the need to live up to our calling, especially the ordained clergy as “fathers’ and ministers of Jesus Christ. I can assure you of our diligence in caring for and protecting our young parishioners. And while following procedures is important we are invited by God into a deeper and more profound relationship with his son in his renunciation of sin and the search for greater holiness in our lives. The call to holiness is a call to conform our lives to Jesus Christ because it is only in our ongoing conversion that our Catholic Church will be healed and purified of this sin that offends the Body of Christ and destroys the trust of so many in God’s goodness. As our Bishop Patrick writes, “Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests – present and past – who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many.”

Mientras que continuamos reflexionando sobre nuestro llamado a la corresponsabilidad, también recordamos nuestros deberes de ser buenos administradores de los dones que se nos han otorgado. A menudo podemos enfocarnos en la administración del tesoro, pensando en el dinero, pero también debemos recordar nuestra corresponsabilidad con los muchos otros dones que Dios comparte con nosotros. Recordamos la famosa historia de San Lorenzo Mártir, cuando le pidieron que entregara los tesoros de la Iglesia a las autoridades civiles y como se presento la mañana siguiente seguido por los pobres de Roma. This week many of our young parishioners will be heading back to school. Some have already begun their studies others are watching the last moments of summer vacation slip by as they gear up for the new year of learning. The last few weeks I have been writing about the Catholic understanding of stewardship with much of the focus on the stewardship of our treasure, which we can often think of as money. This Sunday as we continue to focus on our call to be good stewards of our time, talent and treasure I would like to focus on the treasure of our children. As pastor of St. Lucy Parish our Bishop Patrick has asked me to care for the souls of all people who live within the parish and one of the most important part of the mission to the care for the young of the parish. Parents are called through the marital and baptismal promises to educate their children in the faith. We could say, these sons and daughters are treasures of the relationship. So we may ask: How much of our treasure, our time and our talent are we spending on the faith life of our children? It is in the transmitting of our faith where the true measure of our stewardship is judged. Each year as we begin the formation of our children, youth, young adults, parents, adults and our more elderly parishioners and all who are seeking a greater understanding of how God calls us to follow him, we strive to open our hearts to follow Jesus in bringing the Gospel message into a full and active participation in the parish. It is in all stages of life that we realize God is not finished with us but continues to call us to serve in different ways. In this I, the parish and school staff and those who volunteer in the many ministries, continue to need the greater sharing in the gifts of our time, talent and treasure in the abundance of God’s grace. We cannot do this alone. Your sacrificial gift grows as the seed planted where Jesus reminds us, we become the seed that, “fell on good soil, where it produced a crop–a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” (Mt 13:8) Thank you for your continued generosity. Esta semana, muchos de nuestros jóvenes regresarán a la escuela. Algunos ya han comenzado sus estudios, otros están en los últimos momentos de las vacaciones de verano mientras se preparan para el nuevo año de aprendizaje. Las últimas semanas he escrito sobre la comprensión católica de la corresponsabilidad con gran parte del enfoque en la administración de nuestro tesoro, que a menudo podemos considerar como dinero. Este domingo, a medida que continuamos enfocándonos en nuestro llamado a ser buenos administradores de nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro, me gustaría enfocarme en el tesoro de nuestros hijos. What does God want from us as his beloved sons and daughter in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind.” (Mt 22:37) the total gift of self towards God is the joy of stewardship where our time, talent and treasure begins to serve God’s greater blessing and turn away from the fear and doubt of the world.
Our invitation to be stewards of God’s gifts begins with prayer and working with in the unity of God’s holy Church. It is also the recognition that we are doing God’s work of sanctification in caring for the gifts we have been given to share. In “Creating the Evangelizing Parish” Frs. Frank DeSaino and Kenneth Boyack write, “Evangelization is God’s work. Understanding that the work of salvation is God’s enterprise leads us to reflection on the ultimate goal of God’s effort: the fullness of he reign of God…keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus and on our goal sharing eternal life in heaven is probably the easiest way to keep the big things big and the little things little.” (p61-62)
We are able to share and give in greater love in the recognition of the goal we all share in living our vocation towards the ultimate goal of heaven. The generosity of this work is found in the joy of living with and in Jesus Christ in a community enlivened with love.
Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation “Rejoice and Be Glad: Gaudete et Exsultate” reminds us of this joy, “Fraternal love increases our capacity for joy, since it makes us capable of rejoicing in the good of others: “Rejoice with those who rejoice” (Rom 12:15). “We rejoice when we are weak and you are strong” (2 Cor 13:9). On the other hand, when we “focus primarily on our own needs, we condemn ourselves to a joyless existence”.” (#128)
Pope Francis points us outward as Jesus has commanded us. If we grasp at the gifts we have then we fail to allow generosity to fill our lives. When we choose to open our hearts to the stewardship of generosity discover the joy of building and growing a community of life and love. When we choose to share our gifts of treasure, time and talent we desire that all our brothers and sisters rejoice in their gifts without counting the costs. We share because we know the big and little gift are one in the service of God’s grace.

¿Qué quiere Dios de nosotros como sus amados hijos e hijas en el Evangelio de Mateo? Jesús le dijo: “Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente” (Mt 22:37). El don total de uno mismo hacia Dios es la alegría de la corresponsabilidad donde nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro comienza a servir a la bendición de Dios y se aleja del temor y la duda del mundo. Cuando elegimos abrir nuestros corazones a la corresponsabilidad de la generosidad, descubramos la alegría de construir y hacer crecer una comunidad de vida y amor. Cuando elegimos compartir nuestros dones de tesoro, tiempo y talento, deseamos que todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas gocen sus obsequios sin contar los costos. Compartimos porque sabemos que el gran y el pequeño obsequio son uno al servicio de la gracia de Dios.

As we continue on our journey of faith how we are called to follow Jesus in following our invitation to be good stewards of God’s love. The first question is, How do we share our time, talent, and treasure in search of our vocation as Christians?
Our Christian vocation always begins with a prayerful discernment of who God calls us to be. When we take time in prayer, listening carefully to the voice of love we begin to recognize the how of sharing our gifts of stewardship in knowing God’s call to serve. Too often we see the sharing and giving of our gifts as a duty that robs us of our time, talents and treasure. It is where we see the limited nature of God’s generosity. It is true that life is not always easy our Holy Father, Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation “Rejoice and Be Glad: Gaudete et Exsultate” reminds us, “Hard times may come, when the cross casts its shadow, yet nothing can destroy the supernatural joy that “adapts and changes, but always endures, even as a flicker of light born of our personal certainty that, when everything is said and done, we are infinitely loved.’ That joy brings deep security, serene hope and a spiritual fulfilment that the world cannot understand or appreciate.” (#125)
When we are in prayerful conversation with God and our family we understand the reality of joyful love, hope and faith shared and given. The security of knowing we are loved gives us the courage to fully begin to live within God’s plan for us in our lives. It is in this gift of grace where we move from “I don’t have enough” into the blessing of “I have enough” in the understanding of gratitude.
In their book on marriage, Jackie Francois and Bobby Angel remind us of the mission of the family and how fulfilling this mission opens our heart to the how of generosity in love and service, “Rather than through extraordinary, feats of great sacrifice, we live this mission of the family in the hundreds of little (often hidden) moments…In these moments we learn the truth of what Saint Teresa of Kolkata often emphasized: that while not all of us can do great things, we can all do little things with great love.” (p 143-44)
As a parish family, when each of us chooses to do the small things, live our call to discipleship in being good stewards in sharing our gifts with God through his holy Catholic Church then our parish can and will grow in being disciples of Jesus Christ.

Mientras continuamos nuestra jornada de fe, somos llamados a seguir a Jesús aceptando la invitación a ser buenos administradores del amor de Dios. La primera pregunta es, ¿cómo compartimos nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro en busca de nuestra vocación como cristianos? Nuestra vocación cristiana siempre comienza con un discernimiento piadoso de quién Dios nos llama a ser. Cuando tomamos tiempo en oración, escuchando atentamente la voz de amor, comenzamos a reconocer cómo compartir nuestros dones al reconocer el llamado de Dios. Con demasiada frecuencia vemos que compartir y dar nuestros dones es un deber que nos roba nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro. Es donde vemos la naturaleza limitada de la generosidad de Dios. Cuando estamos en una conversación de oración con Dios y nuestra familia, entendemos la realidad del amor, la esperanza y la fe compartida. La seguridad de saber que somos amados nos da el valor para comenzar a vivir plenamente dentro del plan de Dios para nosotros en nuestras vidas. Es en este don de gracia donde pasamos de “No tengo suficiente” a la bendición de “Tengo suficiente” en la comprensión de la gratitud. CONFESSIONS OF A YOUTH MINISTER AND NEW MOM
TO THE CORE & STAFF: I want to publicly thank our youth ministry Core members who took over youth catechesis and on-going faith formation programs while I was gone. They did a wonderful job which allowed me to spend time with my 6.11lbs, 21 inches heaven-sent baby boy. We named him Hector after my father who went ahead of us to save our seats at the Lord’s Table a year ago. Thank you all so much for the gifts, the advice, the words of encouragement and the prayers that my family and I have received. We are ever so thankful and blessed!
TO THE ADULTS: While I am still a youth minister, at home I went from being in the marriage ministry to a family ministry. My responsibilities have tripled. I am now responsible for making sure that not just my husband makes it to heaven, but that my son grows up to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. I know, easier said than done. Still, I am very much looking forward to his presentation. He will receive the Holy Spirit (Baptism) in April and I just can’t wait to take him to Frist Communion and Confirmation classes when he gets older. I’m looking forward to going to all the parent meetings were I hope I get to volunteer and help in any way possible. Will he get married, become a priest? I won’t worry about that just yet, let it be God’s will.
One night after having fed Hector, burped him, changed his diaper, changed his clothes, sang and rocked him, played with his toys and done every other thing possible, I could not get him to stop crying. I said “God help me out here!” I know he’s my responsibility but he was and is yours before ever having been mine so please help me take care of him. Then the weight of the responsibility really hit me. I am in charge of taking care of just one of God’s many wonderful creations. Yikes! The pressure is on. God decided that I was worthy enough of watching over one of his beloved children. It’s both the scariest and most humbling thought I’ve ever had.
As a youth minister I would usually side with the teens when they complained about their parents. “Parents can be wrong sometimes too,” I would say. Well, no more! Now that I am mom I’m definitely Team Parents all the way! I have never been more appreciative of what my own parents did for me. From the physical to the emotional pains and more, the struggle is real. I am blessed to have a loving husband and my mother to help me raise our little angel, but even with all the help from friends and family it has been a difficult life change to get used to. To think my mother did it twice, and my mother-in-law eleven times, wow! I think each and every woman who has formed a family deserves a medal and praise for the wonder that is motherhood. To all the loving parents out there, I tip my hat to you! I know you’d probably rather hear it straight from your own kids, but in case they haven’t gotten around to it lately please know that you are amazing and that we know you’re doing your best.
TO THE TEENS: Believe it or not, it’s true, every parent out there starts out wanting the very best for their child. Even before they are born you worry about them and try to take care of them as best you can. When I was younger I remember thinking “When I’m pregnant I’m going to eat nothing but salads and veggies so my child grows up healthy.” I did try that and it worked… for like three days. While I did avoid junk food and changed my diet to a healthier one for most of my pregnancy I have to say I had a fallout on my last trimester. Talking with some friends they all mentioned that the cravings came in hard during the last month. So of course come November every fast food placed that I passed by was a temptation. Where I would once turn my nose away because of the awful fried-oil smell, each drive-thru now smelled like a four-star gourmet meal I simply had to have. One Sunday I couldn’t take it anymore, I went to a Five-Guys and order a cheeseburger, fries AND a shake. And you know what, it was good, no it was great. I was satisfied and had no regrets. Later that night as I prepared to go to Mass the guilt started to sink in. Hector wasn’t even born yet and already I had let him down, already I was setting him up for failure. I had trouble focusing in Mass thinking about this, I was already the worst mom ever. I decided I would ask God to forgive me and ask for strength so that it wouldn’t happen again. After receiving Communion as I prayed in the pew God comforted me. He said, “Child calm down, there’s nothing wrong with a burger every once in a while. Besides, you want to give your child the best food ever? You just did, you gave him Me.” My mind was absolutely blown. Talk about the best nourishment! My son had just received his first unofficial Communion. (I know, not really since he’s not fully aware of Who he is receiving, but just go with me here). I had just given my son the best thing ever. The best WHO ever. I want what’s best for him and Jesus is what’s best for him. I did something right! Since being born in November my son has missed only one Sunday Mass, and that was because I was too afraid (and too pooped) to take him out his first week of life. I know that like all parents I’ll probably mess up a few times but God who is our perfect Father will always be there to have our backs and make things better. He is present in the Eucharist and will always be the strength we need to get through it all. Teens, don’t forget that no matter how many times you think you fail God, He will never fail you!
TO ALL: Our team of volunteers, the Core, and some of the youth will sometimes tease me about being the “mother hen.” I have to be the disciplinarian but also the one who cares. Honestly, I love it! Before being a mother of one I was already a mother of 193 (more or less). I now understand that the title has to be earned. A mother is not just someone who has a child, a mother is caring and affectionate. A mother’s love is freely given and unconditional. Nothing made that more clear to me than the words of Mama Mary: “Am I not here, I who am your mother.” Our Lady of Guadalupe said those words to Saint Juan Diego and I found myself saying those words (more or less) to my now 3-month old as I tried to comfort him when I heard him crying coming home from work. “Don’t cry, mommy is here.” How lucky we are to have Mother Mary, she loves us unconditionally and is always waiting for us with arms wide open ready to comfort and watch over us. I want to thank the St. Lucy families for the opportunity of entering into a relationship with the teens and for letting me walk along with them in their faith journey as their “spiritual mom,” it’s truly an honor.

CONFESIONES DE UNA MINISTRA JUVENIL Y NUEVA MAMÁ
A LOS VOLUNTARIOS Y AL PERSONAL: Quiero agradecer públicamente a los miembros del núcleo de nuestro equipo del ministerio juvenil que se hicieron cargo de la catequesis juvenil y de los programas de formación de fe mientras yo no estaba. Hicieron un trabajo maravilloso que me permitió pasar tiempo con mi bebé de 6.11 lb, 21 pulgadas enviado del cielo. Le llamamos Héctor por mi padre, quien se adelantó para guardarnos nuestro lugar en la Mesa del Señor hace un año. Muchas gracias a todos por los regalos, los consejos, las palabras de aliento y las oraciones que mi familia y yo hemos recibido. ¡Estamos tan agradecidos y bendecidos!
A LOS ADULTOS: Mientras todavía soy una ministra de jóvenes, en mi hogar pasé de estar en el ministerio de matrimonio a un ministerio de familia. Mis responsabilidades se han triplicado. Ahora soy responsable de asegurarme de que no solo mi esposo llegue al cielo, sino que también mi hijo crezca y sea un fiel seguidor de Jesucristo. Lo sé, es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. Aún así, estoy ansiosa por su presentación. Él recibirá el Espíritu Santo (Bautismo) en abril y no puedo esperar para llevarlo a las clases de Primera Comunión y Confirmación cuando crezca. Tengo muchas ganas de ir a todas las reuniones de padres. Espero poder ayudar y ser voluntario de cualquier manera posible. ¿Se casará, se convertirá en sacerdote? No me preocuparé por eso todavía. Que sea la voluntad de Dios.
Una noche, después de haber alimentado a Héctor, eructarlo, cambiarle el pañal, cambiarle la ropa, cantarle y mecerlo, jugar con sus juguetes y hacer todo lo posible, no pude lograr que dejara de llorar. Dije “¡Dios ayúdame!” Sé que es mi responsabilidad, pero él era y es tuyo antes de haber sido mío, así que por favor ayúdame a cuidarlo. Entonces el peso de la responsabilidad realmente me agarro. Estoy a cargo de cuidar solo uno de las muchas y maravillosas creaciones de Dios. ¡Ay! La presión es verdadera. Dios decidió que yo era lo suficientemente digna de velar por uno de sus amados hijos. Es el pensamiento más aterrador y humillante que he tenido.
Como ministra de la juventud solía ponerme de lado de los adolescentes cuando se quejaban de sus padres. “A veces los padres también pueden estar equivocados” les decía. Bueno, ¡ya no! Ahora que soy mamá, definitivamente estoy de parte del equipo de los papas! Nunca he estado más agradecida de lo que mis padres hicieron por mí. Desde los dolores físicos hasta los emocionales y más, la lucha es real. Tengo la bendición de tener un esposo amoroso y mi madre que me ayudan a criar a nuestro angelito, pero incluso con toda la ayuda de amigos y familiares, ha sido un cambio de vida muy difícil acostumbrarse. ¡Y pensar que mi madre lo hizo dos veces, y mi suegra once veces, guau! Creo que todas y cada una de las mujeres que formaron una familia merecen una medalla y elogios por la maravilla que es la maternidad. ¡A todos los padres amorosos que hay por ahí, mis respetos! Sé que probablemente preferirías escucharlo directamente de tus propios hijos, pero en caso de que no lo hayan admitido últimamente, padres quiero que sepan que son increíbles y que sabemos que están haciendo lo mejor que pueden.
PARA LOS ADOLESCENTES: Lo creas o no, es cierto, todos los padres comenzamos deseando lo mejor para los hijos. Incluso antes de que nazcan, te preocupas por ellos y tratas de cuidarlos lo mejor que puedas. Cuando era más joven, recuerdo haber pensado: “Cuando este embarazada, no voy a comer más que ensaladas y verduras para que mi hijo crezca sano”. Intenté eso y funcionó … durante tres días. Si bien evité la comida chatarra y cambié mi dieta a una más sana durante la mayor parte de mi embarazo, pero tengo que admitir que tuve una recaída en mi último trimestre. Hablando con algunas amigas, mencionaron que los antojos entraron con fuerza durante el último mes. Así que por supuesto, en noviembre, cada comida rápida que pasé fue una tentación. Donde una vez volteaba la nariz por el horrible olor a aceite frito, ahora cada autovía de comida chatarra me olía como comida gourmet de cuatro estrellas que simplemente tenía que comer. Un domingo no pude soportarlo más, fui a un Five-Guys y pedí una hamburguesa con queso, papas fritas y un batido. Y sabes qué, estuvo riquísimo. Estaba satisfecha y no me arrepentí. Más tarde esa noche, mientras me preparaba para ir a Misa, la culpabilidad comenzó a llegar. Héctor aún no había nacido y ya lo había defraudado, ya lo estaba preparando para el fracaso. Tuve problemas para concentrarme en Misa pensando en esto, ya era la peor madre del siglo. Decidí pedirle a Dios que me perdone y pedirle fortaleza para que no vuelva a suceder. Después de recibir la Comunión mientras oré en la banca, Dios me consoló. Él dijo: “Niña, cálmate, no hay nada malo con una hamburguesa de vez en cuando. Además, ¿quieres darle a tu hijo la mejor comida? Ya lo hiciste, le diste a Mí.” Mi mente estaba absolutamente en shock. ¡Hello, Él es la mejor nutrición! Mi hijo acababa de recibir su primera Comunión no oficial. (Lo sé, no realmente, ya que él no está completamente al tanto de Quién está recibiendo, pero sígueme el cuento). Le acababa de dar a mi hijo lo mejor de todo. Más bien, El mejor de todo. Yo quiero lo mejor para mi hijo y Jesús es lo mejor para él. ¡Hice algo bien! Desde que nacío en noviembre, mi hijo se ha perdido una sola misa dominical, y eso fue porque tenía demasiado miedo (y porque estaba demasiado cansada) para sacarlo en su primera semana de vida. Sé que, como todos los padres, probablemente me equivoque un par de veces, pero Dios, que es nuestro Padre perfecto, siempre estará allí para darnos su mano y mejorar las cosas. Él está presente en la Eucaristía y siempre será la fortaleza que necesitamos para superar cualquier cosa. Adolescentes, no olviden que no importa cuántas veces creas que le fallas a Dios, ¡Él nunca te fallará!
A TODOS: Nuestro equipo de voluntarios, el Core y algunos de los jóvenes a veces se burlarán de mí por ser la “madre gallina” de los pollitos. Tengo que ser la disciplinaria pero también a quien todo y todos le importa. Honestamente, ¡me encanta! Antes de ser madre de uno, ya me consideraba madre de 193 (más o menos). Ahora entiendo que el título tiene que ser ganado. Una madre no es solo alguien que tiene un hijo, una madre es cariñosa y afectuosa. El amor de una madre se da libremente y es incondicional. Nada me lo hizo más claro que las palabras de Mamá María: “No estoy aquí, yo que soy tu madre.” Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe dijo esas palabras a San Juan Diego y me encontré diciendo esas palabras (más o menos) a mi hijo de tres meses cuando traté de consolarlo cuando lo escuché llorar cuando volvía a casa del trabajo. “No llores, mamá está aquí.” Qué afortunados somos de tener a la Santa Madre María, ella nos ama incondicionalmente y siempre nos está esperando con los brazos abiertos, listos para consolarnos y cuidarnos. Quiero agradecer a las familias de San Lucy por la oportunidad de entablar una relación con los adolescentes y por permitirme caminar con ellos en su camino de fe como su “madre espiritual”, es realmente un honor.
