Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”  “Here I am,” I said; “send me!”  (Isaiah 6:8)

God’s Call to Ministry

Jesus was intent on accomplishing God’s work.  Jesus sought to know and to do His Father’s will. It is God who equips and calls us for a life of service. The service differs. The Father has differently appointed us to carry out His work. Each calling is holy because God sends us to share in His holy work.

Every Christian has a calling to follow Jesus wherever He leads.  Ephesians sets forth how God equips and assigns us to various ministry roles.

And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ  (Ephesians 4:11-12)

Knights of Columbus

San Jose Council #3474 was established in 1951. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s service organization guided by the principles of charity, unity, and fraternity. Members of the Knights of Columbus work to overcome the hardships that people face in their parishes and communities. The Council, of which St. Lucy is a part, was formed to help the Catholic Church at multiple levels – parish, diocese, state and national. The Council of St. Lucy Parish includes members from St. Christopher, St. Frances Cabrini, St. Mary (Los Gatos) and Transfiguration. The Knights help with many parish events including the St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner, the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, and the Annual Catholic School Scholarship Award. If you are male, at least 18 years of age and practice your Catholic faith, being a member of this ministry will help you become more involved with helping the Catholic Church at multiple levels: parish, diocese, state, and national.

First Wednesday each month in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2211 Shamrock Drive, San Jose.

Liturgical Environment

Established in 1999 to provide an atmosphere in the church that is conducive to worship. This includes planning, designing, fabricating, and installing liturgical works of art. In preparing for the liturgy we develop a deeper understanding of each liturgy and liturgical season as well as the correlation between the season and the environment and we come to appreciate God’s love for us. We welcome new members who have one or more of the following gifts: Theatrical Set Design, Theatrical Lighting, Graphic Artists, Seamstresses, Floral designers, Master Craftsmen, or other artistry trades. The planning meetings consist of reviewing the season and determining the direction of the upcoming season. The execution phase consists of designing, fabricating, and installing the liturgical works of art.

Planning team members have a 3-year commitment with seasonal meetings, but membership of the Execution team requires no formal commitment. Craftsmen are called as needed.

We have Formation Days in March & September.

We prepare the church to reflect the appropriate environment for the following holidays: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Pentecost, Ordinary Time.

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound

Established in 1974 members of this ministry take Eucharist to and visit the people in the parish and those in rest homes who are ill and unable to come to church. It is an extension of our mission as a parish community to reflect the compassion and healing power of Jesus. We welcome people who demonstrate compassion, care, and concern for the sick and elderly. This ministry is very close to that of Jesus – spiritual healing often occurs. Workshops are provided both by the Diocese and parish to help ministers to prepare for this ministry.

Meeting Frequency and Time Commitments

We spend time with those in our parish who are in need of our company. St. Lucy’s community has 11 rest homes, 2 hospitals & several individuals who are home-bound. The time commitment varies according to the availability of the minister and people’s needs.

Pastoral Council

Established in 1995, the Pastoral Council is a body of parishioners interested in representing you, our ‘Body of Christ’, and the communities that make up our parish. The council members help the Parish staff with the continuing development of St. Lucy’s Mission and in envisioning the ways to live out that mission.

Members are asked to commit to a 1-year, 2-year or 3-year length of service.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Established in 1999, the mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry (PSM) is to create hand-knitted and crocheted shawls/lap throws which are filled with the power of prayer for those in need. The blessing of the Prayer Shawl provides healing and comfort to the recipients. All parishioners are invited to request a shawl by submitting the name of a loved one who has experienced an illness, or to request a shawl for a joyful celebration. This is a beautiful gesture in demonstrating your love. The shawl or lap throw is either crocheted or knitted by one of the dedicated and talented members of PSM. As they are crocheting or knitting an item, prayers are being said. Once the item is completed it, it is then blessed by the priest.

The first Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Lucy Parish, was held on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. At one time there were a total of nineteen crocheters and knitters. Now, there are only four volunteers, and we are looking for more knitters/crocheters to join our small group of dedicated volunteers and participate in this beautiful ministry.

The PSM has provided over 300 Blessed shawls/lap throws for those who are sick and in need of comfort and are given out during a funeral service as well.

One PSM Blessed shawl/lap throw was mailed as far as South Africa; another one delivered to England; another was given to a young girl whose surgery went wrong; a couple have been sent to Southern California; five have been given to employees of the Diocese of San Jose and others have been requested by St. Lucy parishioners for a family member and/or friends who are sick and need of comfort and prayers.

Lastly, the members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the generosity of the donations received. God Bless.

PSM meets on the third Wednesday of the month @ 11 am in the PAC room “B”.

St. Vincent de Paul / Outreach

The vocation of the Society’s members, who are called Vincentians, is to follow Christ through service to those in need and so bear witness to His compassionate and liberating love.

The Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is parish based. Therefore, everyone living in the St Lucy’s parish neighborhood is eligible for assistance, whether they are parishioners or not. The funds received from the quarterly second collection and other special collections for St Vincent de Paul are used to help those clients in-need with rent and utility assistance, food, food cards and toiletries. The Conference also has a food and toiletry collection during the masses on the third Sunday of each month, which is distributed to the housed and unhoused that visit the outreach office.

Faithful to the spirit of its founders, the Society constantly strives for renewal, adapting to changing world conditions. It seeks to be ever aware of the changes that occur in human society and the new types of poverty that may be identified or anticipated. Vincentians endeavor to help the poor to help themselves whenever possible, and to make them aware that they can forge and change their own destinies.

Our Conference is currently looking for new members. What does it mean to be a Vincentian? Vincentians are called to journey together towards holiness. They aspire to burn with the love of God as revealed by Christ and to deepen their own faith and fidelity. They draw nearer to Christ, serving Him in the poor and one another. If you are interested in learning more about the Society and its membership, you can contact us per the contact details listed below.

Services are provided for those individuals and families that live within the boundaries of St Lucy Parish. The unhoused who reside in our area are also welcome.

Scripture Studies

The purpose of the Scripture Study Group is to provide the opportunity to learn more about the scriptural aspects of the Catholic Religion.  We primarily use the Little Rock Scripture Study Program from the Liturgical Press, and typically hold three scripture study sessions per year.

Social Justice Ministry

Are you interested in learning more about the Church’s teachings on Social Justice and serving our most vulnerable brothers and sisters? Consider joining the discussion with our renewed Social Justice Committee. – We are seeking to build a core team to serve as the parish’s catalyst for the work of social justice.
